Website Analysis- Tribes

this is the website for 'tribes' it has given me ideas about what to potentially add to my website which will be on a Facebook page, I have noticed the use of promotion of albums and album covers. Also tour dates and pictures of the band. What I will add to this for my own page is an about section on the main page giving background information about the band. I also hope to add in a section on band merchandise, perhaps even free give aways of merchandise to try and publicise the band. The use of an advert will also help promote the band. I will have my fan site on Facebook as it can then be accessed easily through computers and also via phones, I pads and iPods.

Bombay Bicycle Club-Biography

Bombay Bicycle Club is an Indie/Folk/Rock band from London. The band consists of Jack Steadman, Jamie MacColl, Ed Nash and Suren de Saram. The band formed in 2005 although since the ages of about 15 they were playing under differant band names like The Canals, they picked BOMBAY BICYCLE CLUB which is named after a chain of indian restaurants in London.

Blending together sensual, reverb-slicked post-punk sensibilities with the kind of quirky, rhythmically adventurous bubbliness that brought to mind acts like Orange Juice, Bloc Party, and Vampire Weekend, Bombay Bicycle Club won the competition - which, in previous years, had been won by the likes of Young Knives - and were given a spot opening up V Festival that August. A flurry of offers to put out the band's first album came in from several big labels, but Bombay Bicycle Club opted to self-release their first disc on their homegrown label.

Produced by Jim Abiss (who'd previously worked with the Arctic Monkeys), Bombay Bicycle Club's debut EP, 'The Boy I Used To Be', was released in February 2007; the disc was given a warm critical reception, notably from the folks at NME. Another EP, 'How We Are', was released that October, debuting at the number two spot on the UK indie singles chart.

The members of Bombay Bicycle Club graduated upper secondary school the following June, and the rest of their summer was dominated by the release of a new single,'Evening/Morning' (released on the Young and Lost Club label), and a flurry of U.K. tour dates. Teaming up once again with Abiss, they recorded their debut full-length at Konk Studios that autumn. Bombay Bicycle Club signed with Island Records as the year came to a close; their debut full-length on that label, 'I Had The Blues But I Shook Them Loose', was released in July 2009.

'Paper Planes' -Biography

Paper Planes is the new hit band from Camden, London.
The 3 piece Indie/Rock band formely formed in 2011 after playing small gigs at bars and being 'spotted' by a record producer.
The band consists of 3 friends from Camden who all studied music and art at University.
The band members are, Tom Harrow (Guitar and vocals) Jerry Thomas(Bass) and Mark Hatman (guitar), the band has no drummer, they use session drummers for gigs and tours.
The band are currently under the label, Lightbulb, a relativley small label specialising in Rock and Indie music, so was a perfect offer for the band.
Their first single, 'We Were Children' went on sail last month and has a continuous growing popularity, the band have been working on it since their discovery last year, it was written by all members of the band who said "it is important it is a team effort, if one of us doesnt like something about it, its out, thats how we write and always will".
As the band have been growing in popularity over the last year rumours have been circulating of a tour and possible performances at Festivals like Reading in summer this year.
"We hope to release our second single later this year" said Tom Harrow, "the success in the last year has really been worth all the time and work put in by all of us" the band said at an interview on Radio 1 earlier this month.

Draft of advert for 'Paper Planes'

This is the first draft of my advert for the band i made 'Paper Planes'
It uses the same imgaes found on the CD cover that i have made as it will be memorable to an audience.

No images of the band have been used as through my research of differant bands adverts in this genre very few have band images.

. This Is my first draft of my album cover for the band I created. I have based the album cover on the idea of childhood loss, I have shown this through the popping of the balloon by a hand. This idea was influenced by Banksy's balloon girl. For my finished version I will use the same idea but with a younger hand reaching out instead of popping the balloon.

Bombay Bicycle Club Album cover analysis

TRIBES album cover deconstruction

Music Video Analysis- Evening/Morning-Bombay Bicycle Club

Title: Evening/Morning

Artist: Bombay Bicycle Club

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cC_FseOub7I

Genre: Indie/Rock/Folk, the differant genres are shown in this video. The Indie side of it is shown through the use of the panda costume in the beginning of the video, it shows how the band are not conforming to standard videos of people singing to the audiences it is a more comical view approach to the video.

Lyrics and Visuals: There is a definate relationship between the lyrics and the visuals in this video, for example the lyrics say "Speak at slower speeds" at this point we see the lead singer running but in a almost slow motion camera. This is showing how the director of this video is reinforcing the lyrics and the message through use of visual imagery to help the audience understand the song. However the rest of the time the lyrics do not seem to match the visuals and there is no relationship between them, possibly showing how this video is not meant to reflect he song as much as others would.

Music and Visuals: In this video there is no relationship between the music and visuals in this video until the band are all playing on the side of the road and their clothes are changing colour in time with the drum beat and tempo of the guitars. After this the editing goes back to not matching the visuals again until the end of the video where they are doing star jumps in time to the music again.

Close ups/Star Motifs: Close up of lead singer at the start of the video as he is chased by the two men through the town and estate area. As the rest of the band play instruments the camera cuts to close ups of each of them aswell, this is aswell as close ups of the artists instruments, a convention seen alot in music like this. No real star persona is attempted to be created in this video ,they dont seem to want to be presented as Stars, this is something usually seen in Pop/R&B videos.

Notion of looking: Once in the whole video we seem to be watching the events take place, the rest of the time we are infront of the action with the artists appearing to be singing to us in a almost self reflexive way.

Intertextual: No intertextual referances I can pick up.

This video is both narrative and performance based, as it shows a story of the band member being chased through streets by two men, this is the narrative even though it appears not to suit the lyrics being sung by the band.

Music Video Analysis- Turn Tail- Young Knives

Title: Turn Tail
Artist: Young Knives

Genre: Indie Rock, video has a greyish tint to it, this video is not shot in a studio but instead on location and uses live footage from the badn, contray to the videos of genres like pop where the videos are usually post edited and shot in high value studios with proffesional dancers and so on.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Yrlgg8Lzi0
lyrics and visuals: Lyrics in this video link with what is being shown on screen. For example at the start the video shows a rat in cage, the focus is on the rat, the song says "These are my hands" at this point the camera cuts to a close up of the rats paws on the cage bars. "They can break down brick walls" shows the cage bars with the rat on the inside again. These show a strong connection of lyrics and visuals throughout this video and is a good example of an artist reinforcing their point through use of visual representaions of what is being sung about.

Music and visuals: There is a relationship with music and visuals, this is the way that when the images on screen cuts to the next image in time with the songs tempo, in this case it is with the beat of the drum. This video clearly demonstrates this at 2:47 into the song where the rat ball is rolling down the road and cuts to differant angles in time with the drum beat of the song.

Close Ups/Star Motifs: There are no close ups of the actual artists until late into the song from the begining until 3:44 the video is folowing the story of this rat escaping into the world and getting out of his cage, perhaps this is metaphorical for the band, they could be using the rat to show a point to the audiences. When the video moves on to the concert footage there are plenty of close ups on the artists and instruments, this is a common convention of Indie/Rock music videos.

Notion of looking: We as the audience are always watching the rat in its ball, in this sense we are looking but not in a voyeruistic sense, more of a bypasser observing something.

Intertextual?: There are no intertextual referances in this video that i can see or pick up.

This video is a mix of narrative, the rat escaping its cage and going on a adventure of sorts, also this idea of escape could be a concept that the band are trying to show and also there is a small degree of perfomance at the end of the song where it shows the concert footage aswell as audiences at the concert.

Music Video Analysis-Tribes-We Were Children

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=52QHnUF13hs&ob=av2e

Title: We Were Children
Artist: Tribes
Director: Mickey Voak and Dan White

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Yrlgg8Lzi0
Genre: Rock, the video represents this rock genre by use of live footage, as opposed to studio shot footage that is seen in pop videos. The video is mostly focused upon the audeinces reaction to the rather than have all the focus on the artists. The video setting says alot about the band aswell, it is shot on a shop on camden high street, this is a place where the music will be most appreciated by the people there. Also like many rock videos that use performance footage there are shots of pre-performance set up.

Lyrics and Visuals: Nothing that the band sing about is shown through the visuals, the visuals mostly just stay at the live performance and not stray away to images linking to the lyrics.

Music and visuals: Cuts in time with the beat of the song, this is especially true with shots of the audience as the camera cuts with the beat of the song. It is also true with the shots of the band during the chorus of the song.

Close ups/Star Motifs: All the band memebers have close ups of them during the video, the shots are adding to the creation of a rock star persona. There is also a lot of shots of the audience showing the reactions from them to this band. There are also close ups of instruments, again adding to the rock look of this video, this instrument close ups, especially during solos is a common convention of Rock videos.

Intertertextual Referances: There are no obvious intertextual referances in this video, however in some way it is reminiscient of The Beatles concert on top of Abbey Road studios. However this may not be so obvious to the everyday watcher of this video.

The video is purley perfomance based, no narrative or concept is shown, it is just the band performing to the masses and is a way to advertise themselves in this way.
